This year’s Fringe is full of local and UVic talent. Alexa Gilker and Kayla Hart are two University of Victoria writing alumni who are presenting their first Fringe shows.
Beautiful Obedient Wife is a new play written by local playwright Alexa Gilker during her time in the University of Victoria Writing program. “I was researching different forms of human trafficking for a paper when I stumbled across the mail-order bride phenomenon,” says Gilker. “The issues it raises in terms of sexism, racism, and poverty aren’t black and white, and a comedy seemed a good way to explore such a grey area.” She chose to write about a young woman from the Ukraine, the location where the vast majority of mail-order brides currently come from. Kayla Hart first started writing her show Honesty Hour in a UVic writing class. This theatrical anthology features fictional monologues about secrets and confession. Check out my interview with Kayla about Honesty Hour and the Victoria Fringe.
Beautiful Obedient Wife is playing at St. Andrew’s School Gym, and Honesty Hour is being shown at Langham Court Theatre.
