Slut Revolution

A mellow Sunday afternoon seemed like a good day to see Slut Revolution, a show where Cameryn Moore dishes on her very sexual life.

At the start of her solo show, performer-creator Cameryn Moore sits in her plush chair. She starts speaking as though a hook-up she met online has just come over to her place. Moore starts telling this person, and the audience, about herself. One story moves into another as Moore conveys the sexual events, physical sensations and emotional complications of following her sexual bliss.

The detail with which Moore went into her  social and sensual experiences made her easy to relate to. And while many of the events Moore talks about are discomforting, she uses humour to alleviate the discomfort.

Through her many stories, Moore tends to undermine instead of encourage stereotypes about various sexualities. Personally, Slut Revolution was the reminder that who we are as sexual beings is shaped by our life experiences. While some may find that their sexuality remains more or less unchanged, Moore shows that for many their sexuality is constantly evolving. In her stories we see that a person’s sexuality can be influenced by that first sexual encounter with a friend in a car, the way a father disapproves of a guy friend wearing eyeliner, an urge to make someone suck a dildo after doing the dishes or an intense experience at a BDSM tent at Burning Man. Through Cameryn Moore’s show, we see that sexuality is about more than just your plumbing, your gender and who you fuck.

After seeing her perform, I caught Cameryn Moore for a quick interview. We talked about why she created Slut Revolution, her Fringe experiences and the next show she  is bringing to Victoria.

Slut Revolution is being shown at the Victoria Events Centre. For more information about Cameryn Moore’s work visit  www.camerynmoore.com.
